Custom curtains frame the family room, which is anchored by an RH Modern sofa.
What do you get when two creative powerhouses combine forces in the Hollywood Hills? By the looks of it, one chic Laurel Canyon treehouse. At least that was the case for interior designer Julie Van Daele of Well Received and celebrity stylist Monica Rose, who teamed up to create a kid-friendly, high-style retreat befitting the lifestyle of Monica and her family of five. The longtime friends and former colleagues have watched each other grow and flourish professionally over the years, and finally an opportunity arose to work together. “I’ve known Julie for a very long time, from the beginning of my styling career,” explains the in-demand stylist, who boasts clients like Chrissy Teigen, Kendall Jenner, and Gigi Hadid, just to name a few. “I followed her new venture as an interior designer and really loved her aesthetic, hoping there would be a time we could work together.” As luck would have it, Monica soon decided to redesign the interiors of her Laurel Canyon home, and Julie was her first call.
The open living room welcomes guests to gaze upon the custom artwork by L.A.-based artist Marco Lorenzetto. Ligne Roset’s Togo sofa commands attention while the marble coffee table by Menu adds elegance. A reproduction of Hans Wegner’s Flag Halyard chair was found at Rove Concepts, and an Overstock rug runs underfoot.
“We call our home the treehouse because of the floor-to-ceiling windows and all the imposing foliage surrounding us—it makes us feel perched way up high in the trees,” explains Monica, who was introduced to the property by her dear friend Marci Kays at The Agency, and it was love at first sight. The house was built in 1962, and Julie was excited to set the project in motion and dig into bringing this hidden hideaway to a chic new existence. “I’ll never forget Monica’s inspiration boards,” Julie recalls. “They were stunning! Most clients send me a link to their Pinterest board or hundreds of screenshots, but Monica had two beautifully laid out vision boards, which made for an easy starting-off point.”
A vintage wood table surrounded with vintage dining chairs refurbished and covered in black pony hair gives structure to the dining area, and a Roll & Hill fixture acquired at HD Buttercup hangs overhead.
With inspirations in place, it was time to fashion a cast of furnishings suited to the acclaimed stylist-slash-mom-of-three. “When we first moved into the home, I was eight months pregnant with my son, so I was a bit overwhelmed with work and getting my house to feel like a home,” says Monica. “I always have such a strong vision for creative projects, and for our couch in the family room and our rugs, I can’t even count the hours I spent researching the perfect finds.” Julie adds: “Since Monica’s schedule is so crazy busy, I would send her design presentations via email so she could make her selects.” Trusting in Julie’s creative process, Monica made thoughtful selections that slowly began to render the modern, minimalistic, masculine-chic (but still kid-friendly) vibe that she dreamed of.
